Hi there:

I just got a laptop: IBM ThinkPad T22, PIII 700MHz, 256RAM. 20GB. I installed Windows 2000 Pro, I want to install Linux, I tried Mandrake 9.? in my desktop, it was good, but that was a year ago.

My question is: which distribution of Linux should I install?

NOW PLEASE READ CAREFULL:

I have seen many good threads being destroyed by people that doesn't know how to keep a good thread, PLEASE, If you are going to post about how much you hate Linux, don't do it, if you are going to post how much you hate windows, don't do it, if you are going to post how much you hate MacOS, don't do it. I DON’T want an OS War!
I just want to know what Linux distribution has better options to learn the environment and learn how to set up Linux. Please, let's keep this thread in good shape, no flame Please! I know you have the right to express your opinion, but in this matter, it can get hot.

Thanks for your help!

I have been really pro Mandrake for those just starting out... but I am changing my colors! I have found that Red Hat has done an incredible job of creating a Desktop replacement for windows... The RPM installer is awesome. The redhat network does quick and painless updates. I have setup RealVNC server and connect to it from my windows machines. Its a really easy distro. Try it. I did, and I love it so far.

I vote for Mandrake. From what I hear it has the best support for laptops and you can resize NTFS partitions.

*Self-correction* Yes, as stated by Kona0197, the correct version number is 9.1 not 9.2. (Gettin mixed up with 8.2)

In case anyone is interested, Mandrake 9.2 will be released this fall. Not sure when it will go into beta.

Last version of Mandrake I tried was version 8. If I compare it to Red Hat 9 that I have now, I must say that I prefer Red Hat. But I can't say anything regarding Mandrake 9.1 since I haven't tried it. But Red Hat 9 is really painless and very nice. If you subscibe to the Red Hat Network (RHN), it makes installing softare and updates totally painless. But RHN is not free. Cheap though (60$/year), and totally worth it.
