Hi there:

I just got a laptop: IBM ThinkPad T22, PIII 700MHz, 256RAM. 20GB. I installed Windows 2000 Pro, I want to install Linux, I tried Mandrake 9.? in my desktop, it was good, but that was a year ago.

My question is: which distribution of Linux should I install?

NOW PLEASE READ CAREFULL:

I have seen many good threads being destroyed by people that doesn't know how to keep a good thread, PLEASE, If you are going to post about how much you hate Linux, don't do it, if you are going to post how much you hate windows, don't do it, if you are going to post how much you hate MacOS, don't do it. I DON’T want an OS War!
I just want to know what Linux distribution has better options to learn the environment and learn how to set up Linux. Please, let's keep this thread in good shape, no flame Please! I know you have the right to express your opinion, but in this matter, it can get hot.

Thanks for your help!

Suse has nice high resolution graphics, but unfortunately it has poor support at least for two different sound cards I have tested it with. I voted for Mandrake because it has the best hardware support, is known to be the best distro for laptops, and is easy to install. I have never tried Redhat but I would guess that you cannot go wrong with either Mandrake 9.1 or Redhat 9 since Mandrake is a Redhat based distro.

I just tried out a copy of Red Hat Linux 9 that came with a Linux book I got at Barnes and Noble. It is a nice distro, but unfortunately Red Hat moved stuff around. I got very frustrated trying to find where the Linux kernel is (info I need to install my modem's Linux driver straight from source). Apparently Red Hat does not follow typical Linux standards. I still stand by my vote for Mandrake Linux 9.1.

After trying Red Hat, now I know why many hardcore Linuxers don't like Red Hat.
